Israeli settlements in the West Bank are a war crime, according to the UN human rights investigator. He called on countries on Friday to make it clear to Israel that the “illegal occupation” cannot be without consequences.
UN Special Rapporteur Michael Lynk on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories spoke at a UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva.
The council is boycotted by Israel, which does not recognize his mandate and does not cooperate with him.
“I conclude that the Israeli settlements are a war crime,” Lynk said. “I submit that this finding compels the international community to make clear to Israel that its illegal occupation and its opposition to international law and opinion cannot and will no longer be without consequences.”
