President Bolsonaro in Hospital After Ten Days of Hiccups

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is suffering from abdominal pain and has been hospitalized. The 66-year-old conservative populist has been suffering from hiccups for more than ten days.

Bolsonaro is in good shape, his office said. His diary has been wiped clean. He will remain under observation for 24 to 48 hours to investigate the cause of the prolonged hiccups.

The hiccups may be related to medication he takes after a recent tooth implant or to oesophagal irritation after a series of abdominal surgeries he had to undergo after being stabbed in 2018.

Bolsonaro became infected with the coronavirus a year ago.

He has received a lot of criticism for his approach to Covid-19, which he calls a kind of flu. He said in November that he would not be vaccinated. More than 535,000 Brazilians have died from Covid-19.
