European Commission Orders 170,000 More Monkeypox Virus Vaccines

The European Commission has purchased an additional 170,920 doses of the monkeypox virus vaccine from the Danish biotech company Bavarian Nordic.

That brings the total number to more than 330,000. The new doses will be delivered “before the end of the year”.

“While we have seen a decline in monkeypox cases in the European Union in recent weeks, the threat is not over. So we must remain vigilant,” European Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said in a press release on Wednesday.

So far, the European Union has identified 18,463 cases of monkeypox. Through its health authority Hera, the Commission has now secured 334,540 doses of the vaccine for the Member States.

The purchased doses will be further distributed to the Member States, Norway and Iceland in the coming weeks.
